So Who's Really In Control Of Your Life Anyway?

Jim Rohn says it perfectly: "Work harder on yourself than you do on your job!" and "Formal education will make you a living; Self education will make you a fortune!"

We all go to school from 12 to 20 years (or more) of our lives to learn how to be employees. We are taught the principles and morals of completing school successfully, finding a spouse, having kids, and then getting a good job to support the family until we grow old and die, or retire (and are most likely broke), whichever comes first.

Isn't there more to life than this? Of course there is! At no time are we ever taught the principles of wealth and success. In order for us to learn these principles we must education ourselves on the subjects.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you to drop out of school. The studies and knowledge acquired in school is very important in order to make you a well-rounded person. But there's so much more to it than that; we just never know it until we are exposed to it. Unfortunately, most people will never be exposed to what they need to become truly successful in life.

Insanity is sometimes defined as "Performing the same tasks over and over and expecting different results." I had a friend who used to tell me "The best part about banging your head on the wall is how good it feels when you stop!" Think about these two phrases ... do they make sense to you?

Consequently, if you continue to do the same thing today that you did yesterday, you will continue to have the same thing today that you had yesterday.

Are you wealthy, broke, or somewhere in between? Do you enjoy your life or are you stuck in a dead-end job and miserable? Are you looking forward to your future, or are you just living life as it's handed to you?

Why let others control your life's outcome? Don't you realize it’s totally up to you to determine your life's results?

People say: "I'm fine with my job; my boss lets me go on vacation once a year and I have sick leave and personal days. I go to work each day and come home at night and watch TV, and they pay me to do this! And I get a raise every year too!"

Listen to what you are saying! "My boss LETS me go on vacation." Well that's awful nice of him (her)! Do you realize your boss also tells you where you can go on vacation? Oh yes they do!

They determine where you can go by the salary they pay you! If they don't pay you enough to be able to go to Paris then guess what, you're not going to Paris ... and they controlled that outcome, not you!

"And I have sick leave and personal days." Well that's great but what happens when you're out of sick leave and personal days due to a long illness of your own or a family member? Will you simply just not get paid, or will they fire you for not coming to work?

"I go to work each day and come home at night and watch TV." Well that's obviously going to get you far in life. So then what? You do it all over again the next day … isn't that kind of tedious and uninspiring to you? It made me feel like I was a drone when I lived in that world.

And by the way, wake up to the fact that they don't pay you to watch TV. You trade hours for dollars, and if you aren't there, you're not getting paid.

"And I get a raise every year too!" You must be kidding me! How much of a raise do you truly get; 1%? Let’s be generous and say 3% ... now compare that to the increase in the cost of living each year ... for the sake of argument we'll keep it low and say 5%. How is this giving you a raise? Sure, they give you more money, but it's still not enough to even reach the break even point!

You must understand that as long as you go to that "secure" job every day, you are not in control of your life; others are! Also, the job is more than likely no longer as secure as it once was, or as you think it currently is. Look around. People are getting laid off all over the place. So how secure is your job … really? Be honest with yourself.

I thought my job was secure 4 years ago too. I was on a 10 year rock-solid contract. I had a "secure" position for the next 10 years as far as I was concerned and I was making very close to 6 figures a year, with full medical benefits and 2 weeks paid vacation per year too! Not to mention paid holidays, personal and sick leave.

Life was good … until the money for the project was pulled out from under us one day and 200 people got laid off within 3 days with no severance pay and no offer of other work. That was only 2 years into that rock-solid 10 year contract.

Unfortunately it usually takes an event like this to open people's eyes to the reality that there is no security any more, unless you make it yourself!

There is nobody who is going to tell you to improve yourself except you! Sure, there are people like myself who will tell you that you need improvement and that you need to take action to reach your goals and take control of your life. But unless YOU tell YOURSELF that you need to do this, all of our words are just that; words.

There is a huge difference between hearing what people say and listening to what people say. And you must take action, not just listen! Just listening to (or worse yet, just hearing) what others are telling you isn't enough.

You must act on these ideas and tasks in order to reach your goals and gain control over your life, and your future. Don't get yourself caught in the trap of having a false sense of security like I did. Start taking action today to secure your future and your family's future.

As Always ... Make it a GREAT day!
